How can online activities ensure fairness and impartiality (i.e., prevent cheating)?
The 2024-2025 Math League preliminary round will be held online. The following measures are in place to ensure the fairness and integrity of the exam:

  • Test equipment: Students must use a laptop or tablet with a webcam (to answer questions online via a browser) and a smartphone with a camera and microphone for additional monitoring during the preliminary round.

  • Students must upload their student ID (student ID card or national ID card, including a photo, name, etc.) at least two weeks before the preliminary round.

  • During the preliminary round, the camera of the laptop or tablet (the first camera) must be on at all times to ensure that the student’s face and head remain visible. Throughout the test, invigilators will monitor each student in real time in the background. There are two invigilators assigned for every 60 students. The purpose of the first camera is to verify that the person answering the questions is the registered student (by matching to the uploaded ID photo) and to record the student’s activities during the exam.

  • At the same time, the smartphone camera (the second camera) and microphone must also be on at all times to capture the laptop or tablet screen, the table surface, the student’s upper body, and their hands. It is recommended to place the smartphone on the student’s left side (right side for left-handed writers). This second camera allows invigilators to monitor the screen to ensure the student is not searching for answers online or using instant messaging tools (such as WeChat) to communicate. It also ensures the student does not use any unauthorized materials, including books (such as dictionaries), notes, calculators, additional mobile devices, or other aids.

  • Students must complete a test of their equipment at least two weeks before the preliminary round begins. This includes checking that both the laptop or tablet camera (first camera) and the smartphone camera (second camera) are clear and functioning properly.

  • Before the preliminary round begins, students must clean up any unrelated items around the examination room, including the surface of the desk.

  • After the preliminary round has started, students are not allowed to leave the view of either camera for any reason. If a student leaves the camera range, the preliminary round results will be automatically invalidated.

  • Parents may assist students in setting up and testing their computer and smartphone before the preliminary round begins. However, once the preliminary round has started, no other person is allowed to appear in either camera view. If anyone else appears, the preliminary round results will be automatically invalidated.

  • During the preliminary round, the smartphone (second camera) must be set to airplane mode. This ensures that it is not affected by incoming calls. After setting airplane mode, the wireless network (Wi-Fi) can be turned on.

  • Students’ laptops, tablets, and smartphones must be fully charged in advance. It is also recommended to prepare a power bank for emergencies.

  • Students must ensure that their home internet connection is stable throughout the preliminary round. Any consequences caused by poor or disconnected internet will be the responsibility of the student.

  • During the preliminary round, students must use a web browser on their computer to answer questions online. The answer page must remain in full-screen mode and cannot be switched to any other page or application. The system prohibits copying and pasting. It is strictly forbidden to search for answers online or to communicate with others using instant messaging tools such as WeChat.

  • During the preliminary round, students may use only clean draft paper to assist with calculations. The use of any books (including dictionaries), reference materials, calculators, mobile phones, or other auxiliary tools is strictly prohibited. Students are not allowed to consult anyone or communicate or discuss with anyone during the exam.

  • After the preliminary round, the organizing committee will review the entire answering process (video recordings) of all students. If any suspected cheating behavior is identified, the organizing committee will carefully examine the video recording and contact the candidate for clarification. If cheating is confirmed, the student’s test score will be canceled.

  • The student’s ID photo and the surveillance video recording of the exam will be used solely to determine whether the student completed the exam honestly. They will not be used for any other purpose, will not be disclosed, and will be destroyed after the organizing committee completes the evaluation (usually within one week after the official exam).

  • Participating in the Math League Preliminary Round is also an opportunity to develop personal integrity. Honesty is one of the most important qualities in life. Cheating on an exam ultimately harms oneself.
